Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville senior Carter West (left), a two-time state finalist, has a 175-14 career record.

Carter West has been to the top of the mountain twice. Almost.

The Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville senior has wrestled in the Class 2A 106-pound state championship match each of the last two years.

He lost to a wrestler from Union both years — Jade Hademan his sophomore year and Brayden Bohnsack last year.

West is on a quest this year to get to the top of the mountain and bring home that elusive state championship.

West currently is 43-2 at 113 pounds this season and is ranked fifth.

And once again perched at the top of the mountain is Bohnsack.

That is just fine with West, who understands that in order to be the best, you have to beat the best.

West has a sparkling 175-14 career record for the Nikes.

West, who helped Notre Dame win the Class 2A state team championship as a sophomore, is quietly going about his business and waiting for his chance to get back to the state tournament and complete his mission.

The Hawk Eye recently caught up with West, the High School Athlete of the Week, to learn a little more about him.
