Seven area girls basketball players earn IGCA all-district accolades

Southeast Iowa is well-represented on the 2023-24 Iowa Girls Coaches Association all-district teams released Monday.

Seven area players were named to the Southeast teams in their respective classes.

Leading the way are a pair of local players in Burlington High School sophomore Mylee Stiefel and Notre Dame senior Lauren Krieger.

Also earning honors are Danville senior Jaeda Molle, Holy Trinity senior Mary Kate Bendlage, Columbus junior Lily Coil, Mediapolis senior Haley Steffener and Keokuk sophomore Kendra Boatman.

Stiefel, a 5-foot-7 sophomore guard, spearheaded the Grayhounds’ turnaround. After winning four games last year, BHS went 11-10 this year, including 7-4 and third place in the Southeast Conference. Stiefel averaged 20.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.5 steals. Her 60 made 3-pointers tied for ninth most in Class 4A.

Krieger, a 5-5 senior guard, helped the Nikes to a 10-11 record, including 9-5 and fourth place in the SEI Super Conference South Division. She averaged 18.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 3.3 steals.

Molle, a 5-5 senior guard, led the Bears’ helter-skelter defense which carried them to a Class 1A regional final. Danville finished with a 19-5 record, including 12-2 in the South Division. Molle averaged 14.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 5.0 steals.

Also in Class 1A, Holy Trinity 5-9 senior forward Mary Kate Bendlage helped the Crusaders to a regional final. Holy Trinity finished with a 20-3 record, including 12-2 in the South Division. Bendlage averaged 20.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 3.0 steals. She shot 52.3 percent from the field.

In Class 2A, Columbus junior Lily Coil had an outstanding season before suffering season-ending ACL tear late in the year.

The 5-5 junior guard averaged 14.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 5.7 steals. She led the Wildcats to a 15-7 record, including 12-2 and a second-place finish in the North Division.

In Class 3A, Haley Steffener, a 5-9 senior guard for Mediapolis, averaged 12.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.0 steals.

She helped the Bullettes to an 18-5 record, including 11-3 and third place in the South Division.

Boatman, the Southeast Conference Player of the Year, is a 5-7 sophomore guard who helped the Chiefs to a Class 4A regional final. The Chiefs finished with a 19-4 record, including 10-0 in the Southeast Conference.

Boatman averaged 18.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.4 steals and shot 46.2 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from 3-point range and 72.9 percent from the free-throw line.
